A new theatre show by RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Marmalade is set to take centre stage in Bangor next month, as Marm’s Spotlight arrives at Pontio Arts Centre on 7 February.
Developed in collaboration with Cardiff LGBTQ+ non-profit and venue The Queer Emporium, the show explores life after reality television fame and the impact large-scale drag platforms can have on grassroots queer scenes.
Rolling “off the back of the Drag Race lorry”, Marm’s Spotlight sees Marmalade reflect on her experience competing in RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2024, where she placed in the top four and was widely praised for her fashion and sewing skills. Through comedy, performance and self-reflection, the show asks what happens when drag becomes a global phenomenon – and who gets left out of the spotlight.
The production is framed as a fictional new venue designed and run by Marmalade herself, giving her the chance to question her relationship with drag, fame and creativity, while celebrating the queer artists she loves and wants to platform.
The Bangor performance will feature Marmalade alongside a line-up of guest performers, including bearded drag artist Miss Terri Boxx and bilingual North Wales comedian Katie Gill, whose work draws on personal experiences with humour and candour.
Development stages of Marm’s Spotlight were supported by funding from the Arts Council of Wales, enabling the creative team to adapt the project from a cabaret-style show into a fully realised theatre production.
The show is directed by Elan Isaac, with written material by Priya Hall, and is produced by The Queer Emporium.
Marm’s Spotlight comes to Pontio Arts Centre on 7 February. Tickets are available now via Pontio’s website.
