Claims have been made that some patients at Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Emergency Department are waiting up to two days for medical beds because the wards are full to capacity.
An unofficial Ysbyty Gwynedd Emergency Department (ED) Twitter account tweeted last night: “We’re so sorry that we are struggling to provide the care our patients deserve today, but are hamstrung by our ED being filled with patients waiting for medical beds, some for past 2 days. Remember, GP Out of Hours & local minor injuries units (e.g. Llandudno) are available too”
“This is usually something we see this bad only the day after Boxing Day & the 3rd week in January . Extremely concerning it is here on 2nd day of December!”
Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board are yet to make an official comment, but tweeted last night “Minor Injury Units (MIUs) help with less serious injuries. No appointment needed, and they usually offer shorter waiting times than our emergency departments that have to prioritise the most seriously injured patients. A list of MIUs is available here: http://bit.ly/2APtU56 “
The situation is believed to have eased since yesterday but the Department remains under great pressure. 14 patients are currently queuing in the department for a medical bed, the longest stay in ED 21 hrs. The Deprtment only has 18 spaces in the majors/resus, the capcity for patient spaces hasn’t been reduced by the ongoing building/re-development work.
