A unique new Airbnb offering some of the best views in North Wales is set to play a key role in protecting one of Bangor’s most treasured landmarks.
The historic Piermaster’s House next to Bangor’s Garth Pier has been fully refurbished and is now ready to welcome guests, with all proceeds going towards securing the future of the pier.
The project forms part of a wider income-generating initiative by the Friends of Bangor’s Garth Pier (FBGP), which has transformed the building, vacant since 2022, into a distinctive seafront holiday stay.
The three-bedroom property, which sleeps up to six people, has been completely refurbished throughout, blending its historic character with modern comforts to create a high-quality and memorable stay in a truly unique setting. With no external changes, the character of the historic building and its setting have been preserved.
All the revenue generated will be reinvested directly into the upkeep of the pier, helping fund repairs, maintenance and day-to-day operational costs.
The group say the new holiday let offers a sustainable way to support this work, while giving visitors a truly memorable place to stay. They also believe it will boost tourism in Bangor, bringing more people to the city and supporting local businesses, while adding to the area’s cultural vibrancy.
The Piermaster’s House itself is steeped in history and actually predates the pier. Originally associated with the ferry crossing that once operated between Bangor and Anglesey, the building later became part of the pier’s operation following its construction in 1896. Positioned at the entrance to the iconic Victorian structure, it enjoys panoramic views across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey and the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), making it one of the most unique stays in the region.
The recent refurbishment was completed in just six weeks, thanks to the efforts of volunteers and strong support from local businesses.
Vanessa Hawkins, of the Friends of Bangor’s Garth Pier group, said:
“A huge thank you to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this happen in such a short space of time, and to the local businesses who supported the project. The turnaround in just six weeks has been incredible.”
The project also forms part of a broader vision to revitalise the waterfront area surrounding the pier, making it an even more attractive destination for both residents and visitors.
Garth Pier itself has a remarkable history. Once threatened with demolition, it was famously saved when the city council purchased it for just £1 in 1975, and it underwent major restoration before reopening in 1988. More recently, it has benefited from significant restoration work, including a £1 million repair programme, and received national recognition when it was named Pier of the Year in 2022 by the National Piers Society, with judges praising its outstanding setting and views.
Supporters say the introduction of the holiday let is a logical next step in securing the pier’s long-term future, ensuring it remains safe, accessible and well-loved for generations to come.
