Police attended an incident of crowd trouble in upper Bangor as rival fans clashed prior to the Welsh Cup game  between Bangor City and Caernarfon Town on Saturday evening.

Flares were set off and there were reports of pint glasses being thrown in the streets. Police quickly responded to the incident and advised the public to avoid the area. Holyhead road was closed for a short time.

North Wales Police Tweeted: “We have been dealing with an altercation near to Nantporth football ground, Bangor and can reassure members of the public that this is now under control.

“We ask that you avoid this area unless absolutely necessary to enable officers to deal with crowd control.”

Police escorted fans to the ground, many of whom had been drinking in the pubs in upper Bangor prior to the game, which kicked off at 7.30pm.

Superintendent Richie Green said: “Whilst both sets of fans were being separated by police, a small number of individuals broke through a police cordon and a disturbance ensued.

“Officers quickly bought the disorder under control, although an officer was injured and taken to hospital.

“It is a shame that a small number were intent on causing problems, despite police presence.

“As always, the vast majority of those attending are law abiding football fans and I’m appreciative of their patience whilst the policing operation was in place.”

The crowd of over 2,000 was segregated during the game with a strong police presence, although a flare was thrown onto the pitch and objects, possibly coins, appeared to be thrown at the Caernarfon Town goalkeeper towards the end of the game.

Caernarfon went onto win the game 2-1.

An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact 101, quoting reference number X011746.
