Plans have been submitted for the site of the former Bangor City Social Club for a temporary car park, for four years, creating approximately 75 parking spaces. Plans for a residential development of 49 flats on the site are still being pursued in the medium to long term.
The social club was demolished in 2008 and a subsequent plan to build 49, 1-2 bedroom flats on the site was initially refused but later granted on appeal, the flats were planned as a residential development and not student accommodation.
The proposed development as a temporary car park is intended for long stay use, primarily associated with the nearby Railway Station. The existing site access onto Deiniol Road would be improved but retained in its current established position. The new access would provide a narrower entrance to the site with footway provision in line with current advice for permanent developments.
The site’s surface is currently suitable for the use as a temporary car park but where necessary the existing site surface would be treated with crushed stone, this will ensure that the surface would be suitable for the parking of cars whilst still reflecting the temporary nature of the use.
It is intended that the car park (via the charging regime) would be used primarily for long stay parking which would support people working in the city centre, or tourists on day visits or users of the railway station (commuters).
The plans state that the proposed temporary car park would help meet an identified need within Bangor City Centre and will help support local businesses by providing additional parking for visitors as well as competitively priced long stay parking for local workers and commuters using the nearby railway station. The use will also ensure that the site remains active whilst the implemented consent for residential development is ultimately pursued in the medium to long term.
