Planning has been submitted to demolish the former chip shop on Dean Street in Bangor and replace it with four new socially rented apartments.
The site, which currently includes a vacant Fish and Chips shop with two vacant residential apartments above has been vacant since the end of 2022, with the building’s condition described as “deteriorating ever since”. As the commercial unit has been empty, there have also been no residents living at the two flats above the unit.
According to the planning statement submitted on behalf of Adra Housing Association, they are looking to demolish the poor-quality building and provide a new development that would provide four new socially rented apartments.
The proposed development is:
- Flat 1 – one bedroom, 2-person ground floor flat;
- Flat 2 – one bedroom, 2-person ground floor flat;
- Flat 3 – one bedroom, 2-person first floor flat; and
- Flat 4 – one bedroom, 2-person first floor flat.
Adra will be providing 4 affordable social rented flats in this scheme, which will be targeted towards individuals in temporary accommodation or homeless or resettling.
The flats will be built according to Lifetime Homes standards which will provide flexibility to the properties including bathrooms on the ground floor. This will allow couples or individuals to remain in their homes even if circumstances change, as the properties will be suitable for tenants with minor mobility problems.
At present Adra has over 7,300 affordable rented homes and manage and maintain these properties. During the last fifteen years they have invested £137 million in their homes to achieve the Wales Housing Quality Standard (WHQS). However, there is a strong demand for more affordable units in Gwynedd. To meet this need Adra is building new homes and has implemented an ambitious ‘development’ programme, to invest in the region of £200m in North Wales on their new build programme.
