Bangor 1876 will put forward a proposal to change the name of the club to CPD Bangor City 1876 FC.
The Football Association of Wales has agreed that if fans are supportive of the change, they will permit the change of name.
Bangor 1876 was formed in 2019, when the Supporters Association of Bangor City voted overwhelmingly to create a breakaway club in order to protect football in the city, given the club’s demise and poor management.
At the time, they stated, “We want fans to reconnect with each other and restore the pride and feeling of being a supporter of our historic club. The new club is a creative and positive solution for an ever-changing and precarious situation. We are not disowning Bangor City FC or its history, the club is OURS, it belongs to the fans and local community. “Owners” will come and go but the people remain.”
The club have progressed from Tier 5 of Welsh Football to the Cymru North, but some fans feel the addition of “City” will reflect former glories and the long tradition of football in the city.
Bangor City won eight Welsh Cups and three Welsh Premier League titles as well as enjoying numerous European encounters and spending many years in the lower leagues of the English pyramid, FA Cup and playing at Wembley in the Final of the FA Trophy in 1984.
A statement from Bangor 1876 said: “We will be canvassing the views of all paid up current members, with a secret ballot. Based on the response, we will either remain as Bangor 1876, or introduce the new name for the 2025-26 season.
“All paid-up members will shortly be receiving either an email or letter so that they can voice an opinion on the proposed option to change the name of the club.”
