Bangor-born striker Les Davies, affectionately known as “The Truck”, has called time on a glittering 24‑year football career, saying he’s decided “to finish with football before football finishes me.”
In a Facebook post Les said: “I don’t really know what to say, but I’ve made the decision to hang up the old boots… there’s too many people to thank on here for the journey I’ve had, and it’s been a great journey, plenty of highs and lows.”
“A special mention to my wife Clare Louise Davies who’s been there to pick me up through the hard times… I appreciate everything you do.”
With those emotional words, 40‑year‑old Davies expressed gratitude to supporters, teammates, and most notably his wife Clare, as he focuses on family after more than two decades in the game.
A Career Full of Highs
Beginnings & Bangor City
Les made his Welsh Premier League debut in the 2002‑03 season. After spells with Caernarfon and Porthmadog, he rejoined Bangor City in 2007, becoming a central figure in their historic treble: the Welsh Premier League title (2010‑11) and Welsh Cup victories in 2008, 2009 & 2010
European honour & cult status
In July 2012, Les was the surprise nominee on the prestigious 32‑man shortlist for UEFA’s Best Player in Europe, alongside global icons like Messi and Ronaldo.
This obscure but memorable moment showcased his reach beyond domestic circles and cemented his status as a cult figure in Welsh domestic football.
Journey through North Wales
After leaving Bangor City in 2015, he played for Connah’s Quay Nomads (2015‑17), Bala Town (2017‑18), returned to Bangor City, then moved briefly to Llandudno and Aberystwyth Town. In 2019 he joined Phoenix Club Bangor 1876, scoring prolifically: 72 goals across three seasons and playing a pivotal role in their rise through the Welsh pyramid
Finishing in style
In 2023, Davies signed with Trearddur Bay, continuing his scoring form, including netting on his debut and helping secure the North Wales Coast West Premier Division title
Legacy of a Welsh Football Icon
In over more than 400 Welsh Premier League appearances, Davies struck over 120 top‑flight goals, and his career total across all competitions approaches 270. Beyond the records, he built an unforgettable legacy: fierce strength, unwavering loyalty, and pure passion. As one longtime fan remarked: “He always gave everything for Bangor.”
Looking Ahead
In announcing his retirement, Davies shared his desire to step away gracefully and enjoy more relaxed family‑focused weekends. After 24 years of highs, challenges, and an indelible connection with North Wales football, he leaves the pitch with dignity and gratitude.
Thank you for the goals, the grit, and the memories, Les. Enjoy the next chapter, you’ve earned every bit of it.
