A Drunk driver, broken down vehicles, a fallen tree and poor driving conditions have caused chaos across North Wales.

A broken down vehicle caused traffic chaos on the A55 near Tal Y Bont on Bank Holiday Monday afternoon, resulting in huge tailbacks.

The car, which appeared to be in an unroadworthy condition, finally broke down, blocking one lane of the expressway. Police later confirmed the driver of the vehicle was over the drink drive limit.

Police commented on social media: “Stuck in traffic near Tal Y Bont earlier?

“Blame the driver of this car who decided to drive it like this until it broke down.

“Not only that… he was over the drink drive limit blowing 76.” – The legal limit is 35.

Fallen Tree

Meanwhile Bank holiday traffic is building up on the major routes leading in and out of North Wales as strong winds and heavy rain hit the region.

A fallen tree has closed the A5 in both directions. The road is closed between J11 Llandygai and Bethesda Half Way Bridge. Motorists are being advised to find alternative routes.

Police said: “A5 closed at Halfway Bridge due to fallen tree blocking road. Diversions in place through Tregarth. Closure Bethesda side at Bryn Bella crossroads and on Halfway Bridge side at junction for Tregarth. Road is likely to be closed for some time given size of tree.”

Conwy Tunnel

A temporary closure of the A55 Conwy Tunnel travelling Eastbound caused stationary traffic in the area from a broken down vehicle.  The vehicle has now been safely removed however heavy congestion remains in the area.

Strong winds are causing problems across an already congested Britannia Bridge.

North Wales Police advised: “If you’re travelling expect delays and plan ahead.”
