Pubs in Bangor were busy on Monday as outdoor hospitality in Wales reopened, which also saw cafes and restaurants reopen to customers outdoors.

Up to six people from six households are now able to meet, with social distancing and hygiene measures in place.

Hospitality is set to reopen indoors from 17 May, along with increased limits on those who can attend organised events, but this depends on case rates and possibly the make-up of the Welsh government after the election on 6 May.

The infection rate in Wales is now the lowest since August 2020, with more than a fifth of people in Wales now having received both doses of the Covid vaccine.

First Minister Mark Drakeford said because “meeting outdoors continues to be lower risk than meeting indoors” the lockdown easing was able to go ahead.

‘The Ranch’ on Bangor High Street opened their newly refurbished beer garden on Monday and was busy, they thanked customers for sticking to the rules. A Facebook post said: “Thanks to all our customer who visited today. Great atmosphere and perfect behaviour. Guidelines and rules stuck to.”

The Menai in upper Bangor reopened their beer garden from midday until 9pm, serving food from 2pm till 8pm each day.

North Wales Police welcomed some pubs reopening and were visited by PC 214 Thomas, Special Constable 6711 Sutherland and North Wales Police Licensing officers to ensure Covid safety measures were in place and adhered to.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “With the bank holiday approaching we are asking people to check the venue they wish to visit to see if bookings are required.

“We thank people for their co-operation and look forward to the reopening of inside venues soon.”
