Gwynedd Council are encouraging community groups throughout Gwynedd to make the most of a new scheme that offers public access to computers and the internet.

Following the Council’s successful bid for funding through the Rural Development Fund, Rural Development Programme 2014-2020 to develop the ‘Digital Gwynedd – Access for all’ project, the Council is eager to hear from community groups who are interested in applying for a share of the funding available to install community internet access points.

Councillor Ioan Thomas, Gwynedd Council Cabinet Member for Economic Development said: “We want to make sure that residents in communities across Gwynedd have easy access to new technology and the internet.

“This innovative scheme offers an opportunity for communities where there is currently a lack of access to computers and the web to make the most of the digital revolution. We would urge community groups in these areas to contact us.”

The aim of the scheme, which is already being developed in Y Fron, Bontnewydd, Llandderfel, Llanbedr and Pennal, is to install a series of computers with access to the web in community venues all over the county.

Dai Lloyd-Evans, one of the eight volunteer Directors of Canolfan y Fron said:
“We have been fortunate to be selected as one of the first communities to receive the equipment. The equipment will be installed in a dedicated room at the new Centre. We intend to open in the coming weeks, and the equipment will certainly add to what the centre can offer to the public.”

All communities that receive computers and access to the internet will also receive wider support through the Citizens Online group who will be holding specific sessions in the communities for individuals to develop their skills, build confidence and encourage people to venture online.

If you are a member of a community group or Community Council and are aware that the lack of access to IT equipment to residents within your community, Gwynedd Council is eager to hear from you. It is possible that your community could benefit from investment through this exciting new scheme.

If you are interested, contact the Council to declare an interest before Monday 5th November 2018.
