Plaid Cymru Member of Parliament for Arfon Hywel Williams has expressed his solidarity with the local Muslim community in his constituency during a visit to the Bangor Islamic Centre with Plaid Cymru leader Adam Price.

Mr Williams’ visit followed last week’s terrorist attack on a Mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand, that that left 50 people dead.

Mr Williams and Mr Price were accompanied by Arfon AM Siân Gwenllian and leader of Gwynedd Council Cllr Dyfrig Siencyn.

Hywel Williams MP said: “I was shocked and saddened to learn of the devastating attack on the Muslim community in New Zealand in a place of worship, which should have been a sanctuary from hate and intolerance.

“I want the local Muslim community in my Arfon constituency to know that Plaid Cymru stands shoulder to shoulder with them and utterly condemn those seeking to sow division in our society.

“Here in Arfon, we are a proud and tolerant people who stand by each other in times of need, and so I say with absolute certainty that we fully support our brothers and sisters in the Muslim community.

“It was a pleasure to attend Friday prayers at the Mosque in Bangor with my Plaid Cymru colleagues. I always enjoy visiting the Mosque in Bangor and am always made to feel welcome.

“No matter what our beliefs, colour or nationality, the culture of respect is one we should have for everybody and it’s important that we as a community come together to show solidarity.”
