North Wales Police are investigating reports of ‘needle spiking’ in nightclubs in the Bangor area.
Needle spiking occurs where an offender injects the victim with a substance using a needle and reported incidents are on the increase across the UK. Around three quarters of spiking victims are women, but men can be targeted too.
Police said a result of the reports there will be a mixture of uniform and non-uniform officers on patrol in the area.
A statement from North Wales Police read: “Nightclubs in the area are cooperating with us to emphasise that the safety of their customers is key, and measures are being put into place to help us do this. Security staff are increasing the checks that they make upon entering the premises and there are designated members of staff who can help you if you feel that you have been spiked.
There are steps that you can take to keep yourself safe when you do go out:
- Be vigilant.
- Report any suspicious activity or behaviour to staff or police.
- Be aware of anything offered to you by someone you don’t know.
“Recently we have been made aware of victims disclosing suspected spiking on social media prior to informing the police. We would strongly advise against this and would urge people to make their report to us in the first instance.”
