North Wales Police have been carrying out road safety checks on caravans, motorhomes and trailers on the outskirts of Bangor.

A statement from the Roads Policing Unit said: “It is vital that drivers make all the necessary checks before they hit the road, to ensure that what they are towing are roadworthy, secure, and have the correct weight distribution.

“If your tyres or vehicle aren’t roadworthy or your license and insurance isn’t suitable, you run the very real risk of having points added to your license and a fine from the court.

“Towing incidents on the road network can also cause considerable delays to other road users, not to mention being potentially hazardous; so please reduce your speed, adapt how you drive and make sure you have the necessary breakdown cover.

“We’ve also been using a special scanner today as part of the operation, which can help detect stolen caravans. The anti-theft system enables officers to scan a caravan or motorhome to see if it has been reported as stolen, and find out who the registered owner is. Thankfully all were above board which is good news.

“Whilst we were at the location we also looked at other vehicles – one car (blue Suzuki) was seized due to the driver only being a provisional licence holder who was unsupervised and didn’t have ‘L’ plates.

“These checks are all done as part of our commitment in keeping the roads safe for everyone. The feedback has been very positive today so a big thanks from us for your patience and understanding.“
