Former Bangor councillor Mair Rowlands has officially declared her intention to stand for selection as one of Plaid Cymru’s candidates for the newly formed Bangor Conwy Môn constituency in the 2026 Senedd elections.
Rowlands previously served as the councillor for the Menai ward in Upper Bangor from 2012 to 2022 and held prominent leadership roles, including Cabinet Member and Deputy Leader of Gwynedd Council.
In a statement announcing her candidacy, Rowlands expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to continue serving her community at the Senedd level.
“I’m delighted to announce my intention to put my name forward for selection as one of the Plaid Cymru candidates for the new Bangor Conwy Môn constituency for the Senedd elections in 2026,” she said.
Reflecting on her decade-long experience in local government, Rowlands emphasized her dedication to community representation.
“I have ten years of experience representing Bangor as a County Councillor, including serving as a Cabinet Member and Deputy Leader of Gwynedd Council. During this time, I worked tirelessly for our communities, ensuring that the voice of residents was heard.”
Rowlands also highlighted her background in higher education and the voluntary sector, stating that it has reinforced her commitment to empowering communities, expanding opportunities for young people, and strengthening public services.
“I have personal and family ties across the constituency and experience as a candidate for both the Senedd and Westminster. I understand the challenges facing people in this area – but also the huge opportunities we have here,” she added.
As she embarks on the selection process, Rowlands is looking forward to engaging with constituents and advocating for their needs.
“I look forward to the selection process and the chance to work hard for the people of this constituency.”
The newly formed Bangor Conwy Môn constituency is set to be contested in the 2026 Senedd elections, and Rowlands’ candidacy marks an important step in Plaid Cymru’s preparations for the race.
