Rail passengers in Bangor and across North Wales are set to see a major boost in train services later this year.

Transport for Wales has confirmed that a new rail timetable will be introduced from 17 May 2026, bringing what officials say is one of the most significant changes to North Wales rail services in a generation.

The changes are expected to increase services on the North Wales Main Line by around 50%, improving connections along the coast and strengthening links with major cities in England.

The overhaul forms part of the wider Network North Wales programme, a long-term plan aimed at creating a more integrated public transport network and improving connectivity between communities, jobs and services.

What it means for the North Wales coast

Several of the changes will affect the North Wales Coast Line, which runs through Bangor.

Among the key changes announced:

  • Manchester Airport trains extending to Holyhead
  • Liverpool-Chester services continuing to Llandudno
  • A more regular hourly timetable to make journeys easier to plan
  • Stations such as Llanfairfechan, Penmaenmawr and Conwy becoming regular stops on more services

Transport for Wales says the new structure should make the railway simpler and more reliable for passengers, with trains running at more consistent times each hour.

Some direct services will change under the new timetable, with certain journeys requiring connections at hubs such as Chester or Llandudno Junction. Stopping patterns at some stations may also change.

Passengers are advised to check their journey if travelling after 17 May using the Transport for Wales journey planner.
