A new Sporting Memories Club, which allows local residents to reminisce about sporting events and sports stars of yesteryear, will be held weekly at Bwyd Da Café, on Bangor High Street.
The ‘Bangor Sporting Memories Club’ is a collaboration between Bangor 1876 and Dementia Actif Gwynedd, which is primarily for older adults who would enjoy some company, people affected by dementia or other health conditions, or anyone who just fancies come along.
Sporting Memories groups involve reminiscing about sporting events and sports stars, as well as participating in games and quizzes.
Emma Quaeck of Dementia Actif Gwynedd explained: “Dementia Actif Gwynedd have delivered online Sporting Memories sessions and currently run a club in Nefyn.
“It’s a joy to see the impact that reminiscing about sporting events and sports stars can have on people. I’m always amazed as to how people are able to retain so many facts and dates, as well as all manner of sporting trivia.
“Once the topic of conversation is triggered, sports fans like nothing better than to go back to an era to share happy memories and you can often see their faces light up. These events are social, fun and informative.”
The club will take place every Monday from 3-4.30pm in Bwyd Da (275 High Street, Bangor). The sessions are free of charge and have been generously supported by Watkin Property Ventures (WPV).
Bangor 1876 chairman Glynne Roberts said: “Bangor 1876 are keen to work at the heart of the community, supporting health and wellbeing initiatives.
“We are fortunate that our major sponsors Watkin Property Ventures are also supporting the mental wellbeing programmes, which enables this important work to take place.
“Bangor 1876 is about more than just football. Being fan-owned, we all have a stake in our community. The Sporting Memories programme brings together a number of partner organisations, ensuring that we together bring positive developments to the city and the wider community.”
