A planning application to build 55 residential units on the former Dickies boat yard site in Bangor has been withdrawn.
The proposals were first submitted by the Watkin Jones Group in 2018, with the time limit on the scheme extended until 31 March 2023.
The scheme included a mix of 3-4 bed houses and 2-3 bed apartments, along with its associated works, including a new headland walkway to link the development with existing pedestrian routes. Phase 1 of the development, known as ‘Y Bae’, provided 72 new dwellings.
Cyngor Gwynedd officers had recommended the planning committee refuse the application, when they next meet on 20 March.
Public consultations had raised concerns about overdevelopment of the site, the ecological impact and contamination on site from building rubble, impact on wading birds and the presence of Japanese knotweed.
Over 400 people signed an online petition objecting to the development claiming the plans “Will change the views over Hirael Bay forever and that the plans are an unnecessary development which will change Bangor’s iconic waterfront for the worse.”
Bangor city council had considered the development too large and an over-development while Bangor Civic Society had also objected to the plans.
