A new political movement spearheaded by former Labour MP Zara Sultana and former party leader Jeremy Corbyn is beginning to take root in North Wales, with its first public indoor meeting set for Llanfairfechan Town Hall on Wednesday 27 August at 7pm.
The group, provisionally called Your Party until a permanent name is decided, was launched last month following Sultana’s announcement that she would leave the Labour Party to work alongside Corbyn on building what they describe as a “rallying cry for a better government.”
In response, a local supporter in Ynys Môn created a Facebook page on 25 July to mobilise interest in the area. What began as a page for Anglesey has since expanded to cover North West Wales, after drawing growing attention online.
The first in-person gathering of the movement in Wales took place on Lligwy Beach earlier this month. Under sunny skies and with a banner supplied by broadcaster Crispin Flintoff, supporters came together for what is believed to be the first public Your Party event in the UK.
Since then, the movement has reported significant momentum nationwide. According to organisers, there have been eight million expressions of interest across the UK, including around 28,000 in Wales.
Your Party is positioning itself as an alternative to the Labour Party, at least for people who feel Labour is no longer representing their values. Supporters say the project is being driven by “unity in common sense, re-distributive, ethical politics.”
The upcoming Llanfairfechan Town Hall meeting will be the first formal indoor gathering for the movement in North Wales. Residents are invited to attend, whether to participate or simply to observe.
More information about the event and the wider movement can be found on their Facebook pages and website:
