BLAS Pontio, Pontio’s Outreach programme, has launched a new initiative aimed at transforming the Clinic Plant Uned Heulwen Children’s Clinic at Ysbyty Gwynedd into a more welcoming and child-friendly environment. This collaborative effort is designed to enhance the experience of children and their families during what can often be a stressful visit to the hospital.
After a year of engaging with families through drop-in sessions to understand their needs, BLAS Pontio has developed a comprehensive project focused on improving the clinic’s atmosphere. The first major step in this transformation began on Thursday when renowned Welsh graffiti artist, Andy (Dime One) Birch, began work on a large-scale mural at the front of the Unit. This mural is intended to give the clinic a distinctive, child-friendly identity and make it easily recognizable as a space designed for children, contrasting with the otherwise standard appearance of Ysbyty Gwynedd.
In the months ahead, BLAS Pontio will collaborate with artist Eleri Jones and musician Henry Horrell to bring creative activities to the waiting room, creating an engaging atmosphere for families as they wait for their appointments. These activities will be monitored over the next year to assess their impact on patients’ experiences and whether they can help reduce missed appointments— which is a common challenge in healthcare settings.
“This project has been an excellent opportunity for us in the Children’s Outpatient to make the place friendlier for children, young people, and their families when attending appointments. Coming to the hospital can be a very stressful time, and Andy’s work will make the department fun and welcoming to all ages,” said Kelly Jones, Clinical Service Manager Paediatrics (Matron) at Ysbyty Gwynedd.
“I first visited the Heulwen unit a couple of years ago, and although the staff are friendly and welcoming, the same couldn’t be said for the unit. This project will transform the department for patients, their families, and the staff. I can’t wait to see it in full swing and see the positive effects,” said Lisa Hother, Engagement Officer. “I would like to say a massive thank you to the Heulwen employees, BLAS Pontio, and everyone else who has helped bring this project to life.”
“I am so proud to be working on this project, and the staff at the Unit have been so kind and welcoming. It’s heartwarming to give back to such an amazing team,” said Andy Birch, the artist behind the mural.
Mared Elliw Huws, BLAS Pontio Coordinator, added, “The arts have a profound impact on health and well-being, and I’m thrilled to bring such talented artists to the Unit, ensuring that everyone benefits from the incredible power of creativity.”
This initiative is a wonderful example of how creativity and collaboration can create positive change within the healthcare sector, making healthcare environments more welcoming and supportive for both patients and staff.
The project is made possible with funding from Arts Council Wales, alongside sponsorship from Owen and Palmer Limited, Adra Housing Association, and the donation of wood for the mural from Huws Gray Bangor.
