The COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented event in our lifetime, and Storiel Museum in Bangor believe that it is essential to capture this period by making an appeal for items so as to have a historic record.

Storiel are looking for items that reflect everyone’s experiences in the community during this period. These can be artworks, photographs, videos, poetry, extract from a diary, recipes, stories or objects.

This will enable them to tell the story of the pandemic in Gwynedd through archives and objects in the future. The items will also contribute towards portraying a fuller account of the history and culture of Gwynedd.

Due to the effects of COVID-19, items cannot be physically accepted at the moment. Therefore Storiel are asking the public to take part by sending in photos/videos in digital format and images of items in digital format.

It is intended to create a virtual gallery on Storiel’s Instagram and website to get an overview of life during the COVID-19 lockdown by displaying a selection of the digital items received.

Once it is safe to do so in the future, Storiel will select items to be added to their collections and will contact you to arrange their transfer. Please keep them until then. Documents such as artworks / photographs / videos / poetry / extract from a diary / recipes / stories and similar will be transferred to the Gwynedd Archives Service collection and objects will be transferred to Storiel Museum’s collection.

It is also intended to select some of these items to create an exhibition at Storiel when it is safe to do so in the future.

Councillor Gareth Thomas, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for developing the Economy and Community, said: “The period we are in at the moment is certainly unprecedented and it is important that we make a historical record of it by displaying a wide range of items that reflect the experiences of people in Gwynedd.

“So if you have an item that tells a story about this difficult time, please photograph it and send it via e-mail to Storiel.”

This project is launched as part of the Local and Community History Month. Storiel will be contributing to other national initiatives and specific activities for children and young people will also be organised. Keep up with the latest events by checking www.storiel.cymru and also their social media accounts.
