Step away from the hustle and bustle of the Bangor Summer Festival and discover a very different kind of magic inside the beautiful Bangor Cathedral and its surrounding grounds. From nostalgic steam engines to playful meet-and-greets, from peaceful baby spaces to creative workshops, the Cathedral zone offers something for every age – and plenty of reasons to linger.

On the High Street – a Welcome Like No Other
Right outside the Cathedral grounds you’ll be greeted by two show-stopping icons – the Ghostbusters’ legendary Ecto-1 and Disney Pixar’s Lightning McQueen, ready for those all-important selfies. Nearby, the vintage steam engines will transport you back to a slower, golden age of engineering, while over 15 community and charity stalls fill the grounds with colour, conversation, and local spirit. Try your hand at the 9-hole Crazy Golf course for just £2.50 a go, and you might even bump into special guests Spider-Man and Elsa, bringing big smiles to festival-goers of all ages.

Inside the Cathedral – Fun for the Little Ones
Inside, the focus shifts to our youngest visitors. A soft play area for babies and toddlers offers a safe, fun space to explore, with baby-changing facilities and a dedicated quiet area for feeding. Parents can also access expert breastfeeding advice from Karen Williams, a professional breastfeeding consultant.

There’s a chance for children to add their mark to the Cathedral’s time capsule – a memory that will live on for generations. At 11am, 12pm, 1pm, and 2pm, settle in for a bilingual storytelling of The Very Hungry Caterpillar in English and Welsh. Children are encouraged to bring their own caterpillars to join in the fun!

A Hunt with a History
For older children – and curious grown-ups – there’s the Cathedral’s famous mouse hunt. Hidden within the wooden furnishings are five tiny carved mice, created by master carpenter Robert Thompson in the early 20th century. Can you find them all? Complete the hunt and you could win a prize.

Refresh, Reflect, and Recharge
The Cathedral will also be serving tea, coffee, and light refreshments throughout the day. As well as being a hub of family activity, it’s the perfect space to pause, breathe, and enjoy a moment of calm away from the festival crowds.

Whether you’re hunting for mice, sipping tea, or simply enjoying the peace, the Cathedral zone is proof that festivals aren’t just about noise and bright lights – they’re also about connection, heritage, and community spirit.
