Brooke Graham, of Maesgeirchen, Bangor, has won a community champion award, organised by Morrisons.

Morrisons in Bangor is looking asked for nominations to find a ‘little sunshine‘ who is under the age of 16 who has gone above and beyond to help the community during lockdown.

During the Covid-19 pandemic Brooke started selling cakes and raised £175 for the NHS Charity Awyr Las. She then went on to bake over 100 cakes for Maesgeirchen pensioners as part of the regular food ‘drop off’ scheme in the area.

After announcing the winner and presenting Brooke with a certificate and Morrisons hamper, a spokesperson for Morrisons said: “Brooke you’re absolutely amazing and it was a privilege to get to meet you today.

“The community is overwhelmed with your kindness and what you’ve done in the community during the Pandemic. Baking cakes to raise money for local Hospital and baking cakes for local residents & local care home in Bangor. Brooke has also had 2 hip operations during pandemic and to carry on doing what she’s been doing is absolutely amazing.

“You really should be proud of yourself.”

Cllr Nigel Pickavance said: “In times of difficulty during this Covid-19 epidemic, it’s heart-warming to hear of positive acts of kindness happening in communities.

“The effort of Brooke is an example of this kindness and the Community of Maesgeirchen would like to use this opportunity to say a big thank you to her.

“Brooke used her hobby of baking and turned it into a way to raise money in a brilliant way and I am sure she will have inspired many young people to do similar in the future.

“The cakes she made went down really well and many of the recipients were very emotional to learn that someone so young could be so caring towards them during these difficult times.”
