Bangor University will make its second appearance on the popular BBC show University Challenge on Monday, 20 February.

In the first round of the quiz competition for students, Bangor were engaged in a tough battle with Nottingham University, finally emerging as winners with a 135pts-125pts scoreline.

Bangor will again put their fingers on buzzers in the second round of the 2022/23 competition, as they are pitted against another esteemed institution of higher learning, Durham University, in what is sure to be a battle of wits and knowledge.

BBC Two’s University Challenge is the UK’s annual university TV quiz show, with teams of four competing head-to-head across a range of question categories, including science, history, literature, and current events.

Bangor University has appeared on the television show six times since the show started to air on the BBC in 1994. Bangor made it through to the second-round in 2004 and 2014 and through to the Semi-Finals in 1999 and 2013.

This season’s team, consisting of team captain Laura Lloyd-Williams from the School of Medical and Health Sciences and teammates, Angus(Gus) Bastiani from the School of History, Law and Social Sciences, Ethan Silcocks from the School of Medical and Health Sciences, and Roy Pounder from the School of History, Law and Social Sciences.

This will be the final series hosted by Jeremy Paxman, who has been confirmed to be standing down from the role after 29 years.

The news comes after the presenter revealed he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease last year. His doctor diagnosed him with the condition after noticing that he was less “exuberant” on the quiz show. The current batch of episodes, presented by Paxman, will run until the summer of 2023. Journalist and broadcaster Amol Rajan will take over as the host from autumn 2023.

The programme featuring Bangor University will be broadcast on Monday 20 February on BBC2 at 8.30pm.
