Bangor City Stadium has announced a significant wave of upgrades following a successful £240,000 funding bid from the Football Association of Wales (FAW), in a move that is set to transform the facility ahead of next year’s UEFA Under-19 Championship.
The investment will see the installation of brand-new floodlighting, a cutting-edge public address system, and UEFA-standard equipment, ensuring the stadium meets Category 2 UEFA standards and is ready to host international fixtures at the highest level.
Leading the list of improvements is the introduction of four new floodlight towers, which will increase the stadium’s lighting levels to 800 lux, a benchmark required for UEFA Category 2 certification. This puts Bangor City Stadium among the first in the Welsh football pyramid to meet such a specification, a milestone that reflects its growing stature in domestic and international football.
Director of Bangor City Stadium, Lee Dixon, described the development as “a game changer,” noting the importance of the upgrades with the stadium set to be one of the venues for the UEFA Under-19 European Championships in summer 2026.
“With us hosting the EURO Under-19s tournament next summer, it is vitally important we offer facilities at the very highest level,” said Dixon. “The 800 lux lighting system gives us the opportunity to push on to achieving the Category 2 UEFA status. We’re incredibly grateful to the FAW for their continued support.”
Alongside the lighting, the stadium will also benefit from a modern PA system that will improve the matchday experience for fans and make the venue more viable for live events for the community. Later this year, UEFA-compliant goals and team dugouts will also be installed as part of the long-term vision to elevate Bangor City Stadium into one of Wales’s top footballing venues.
The upgrades are part of a broader redevelopment strategy, as the stadium undergoes a gradual transformation focused on sustainability, accessibility, and fan engagement.
With further announcements expected in the coming weeks, the current round of upgrades signals an exciting new chapter for the stadium on the banks of the Menai Strait.
