The Most Reverend Andrew John has announced his immediate retirement as Archbishop of Wales, bringing to a close more than three decades of ordained ministry within the Church in Wales. He will also step down as Bishop of Bangor on 31 August 2025.
In a personal message shared with the Church today, Archbishop John described his time in ministry as “an enormous joy” and thanked colleagues and communities for their trust and partnership:
“It has been an enormous joy to serve in the Church in Wales for over 35 years… I cannot thank you enough for the privilege of working at your side for the sake of our Saviour Jesus Christ.”
Archbishop John has served as Bishop of Bangor since 2008 and was elected Archbishop of Wales in 2021. His tenure has spanned significant institutional change, internal scrutiny, and ongoing conversations about the role of the Church in modern Welsh society.
The Bench of Bishops paid tribute to his dedication, noting: “Andy has served with commitment and energy. He has led the Bench with grace and discernment through a period of significant challenge and change.”
While no formal reason for the timing of his departure was given, Church leaders emphasised gratitude for his pastoral leadership and administrative service.
Professor Medwin Hughes, chair of the Representative Body of the Church in Wales, acknowledged the Archbishop’s role in shaping church life over recent years:
“The Archbishop has led the Church through a time of immense change… many have been touched by his pastoral care and dedication to improving the life of the Church and the wider community.”
The Church in Wales will now begin the process of electing a new Archbishop from among the six diocesan bishops. Until a successor is appointed, the Bench of Bishops will collectively carry out the duties of the Archbishop, while the Diocese of Bangor will prepare for a transition in episcopal leadership.
The Church has also committed to continued reflection and renewal as it looks to the future. The coming months are expected to be a time of both transition and recommitment to its core mission.
