Over 40 bags of rubbish were collected from Bangor’s coastline on Saturday, when volunteers met at Garth Pier and picked up the litter from the shoreline of the Menai Strait.
The event was organised by 17-year-old Jordan Roberts, who decided to take positive action after she purchased a bracelet that was made entirely from recycled plastic found in the sea.
Inspired by the bracelet Jordan felt she could do something to help in her local area, as she’d never seen a litter pick arranged in Hirael before.
Litter picking equipment was provided by Tidy Towns Wales and Gwynedd Council and free refreshements were provided to the volunteers by the Tap & Spile and kiosk owners on the pier.
Bangor and Gwynedd Councillor Nigel Pickavance said: “Jordan is an inspiration to all young people.
“The coast of Bangor is now 40 bags cleaner. That’s brilliant but also sad it had to be collected. Hopefully much jewellery can be created from today’s collection.
“Thank you to all who took part! Well done Jordan and here’s to your next venture.”
Jordan already has plans for another community cleanup in Bangor, this time she has upper Bangor in her sights. She said: “Thank you to everyone who turned up on Saturday, it’s so nice to see people helping the community and we collected over 40 bags of litter.
“I’m hoping to organise another event in upper Bangor in a few weeks time.”
