A pupil from Ysgol Tryfan in Bangor has been thanked for her volunteer work, which includes raising money for cancer charities, delivering gifts to patients at Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Hergest unit, and tackling dog fouling.

Sixteen year-old Sïan Eluned is currently a GCSE pupil at Ysgol Tryfan and has spent the last three years volunteering, fundraising for cancer charities and working to improve her local community.

In 2019 Sïan, of y Felinheli, raised £1,253 for the Glan Clwyd Cancer Unit through holding raffles, a tombola and selling clothes. Since 2020 she’s also raised £1000 for Giddo’s Gift, a charity that provide wishes, gifts and financial grants to teenagers, young adults and their families suffering from cancer.

Furthermore, Sïan is passionate about supporting patients in Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Hergest unit, bringing them gifts at Christmas time. In Christmas 2020 Sïan gifted patients at Ysbytyd Cefni, Llangefni with chocolates and cards, as well as giving patients in Hergest Chocolate Eggs this Easter.

Sïan has also visited the local Police, Fire Brigade, Ambulance, Air Ambulance, and Coast Guard, making them a hamper to thank them for their brave work.

Recently Sïan went around her local village picking up dog waste and installing ‘poop scoop bags’ in locations near her school.

In addition to everything else, Sïan has started making Ecobricks, plastic bottles packed tight with used plastic to make a reusable building block.

Siân Gwenllian, the local Member of the Senedd for Arfon, visited Sïan recently to thank her for her ‘admirable work.’

She said: “A lot of young people have been exceptional examples during the past year, stepping up to the fore, volunteering, helping the elderly, and fundraising.

“Sïan’s work has been admirable and I would like to thank her very much.

“She is a shining example to us all, and she reflects the duty our young people feel towards others; the elderly, the environment, and patients in our hospitals.

“It was a privilege to visit Sïan to thank her personally.”
