Mr Chris Parry of Ysgol Friars has stepped in to rescue the Mathematics Masterclass scheme for the brightest and best young mathematicians in year 9 across North Wales.
The scheme has been offered by Bangor University for the past 35 years, but this year staffing changes meant they were unable to offer the Masterclasses.
Not wanting the 2020 cohort to miss out, Mr Chris Parry, Head of Maths and Senior Teacher at Ysgol Friars decided to host the event in Ysgol Friars. He was a past pupil on the course himself in 1989.
Mr Parry called upon colleagues across North Wales to present various sessions over the coming weeks. Mr Godding (Ysgol Friars) and Mrs James (Ysgol Tryfan) got the program underway last Saturday, 29th February with sessions on calculus and imaginary numbers
The Mathematics Masterclasses are aimed at the most able and talented pupils in Year 9. Every spring, approximately 60 pupils are invited from secondary schools across Gwynedd, Anglesey and Conwy to participate in exciting and inspiring sessions run over 5 Saturdays.
Presenters range from experienced Heads of Mathematics to creative and inspirational young teachers. The Royal Institution for Mathematics will be presenting certificates to the young mathematicians that complete the course in the closing ceremony on Saturday 28th March.
