Building work is set to start on the new Ysgol y Garnedd primary school, which is part of a £12.7 million investment in primary education in Bangor.
The new school will accommodate 420 pupils, provide fourteen classrooms, two Additional Learning Needs classrooms, a Cylch Meithrin along with a number of different teaching spaces, staff and administration areas and a large hall.
The school will be built on the corner of the Ysgol Friars playing fields. Closest to the existing Garnedd school.
As part of the work there will be some remodelling of the Friars playing fields to create two new and much improved pitches for Friars school. Work will commence on one of these pitches immediately.
The Ysgol Friars’ Tennis Courts will also be resurfaced and remarked as part of the development.
The school have advised parents that “As a result of the work a significant area of the playing fields will be fenced off with security fencing/ in addition the footpaths from Garnedd school car park and the path up Penrhos Avenue towards Friars School will be closed from 4th March.”
Once the new school building is completed the existing school will be demolished to make way for an additional car park and sports fields.
The new Ysgol y Garnedd will also see the closure of Ysgol Babanod Coed Mawr and Ysgol Glanadda, which are due to close in August 2020.
