Work is progressing well on a new home for Ysgol y Garnedd in Bangor, which is expected to open its doors to pupils after the autumn half term.
Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Cemlyn Williams, Local Member Councillor Elin Walker Jones and Project Leader Diane Jones recently visited the impressive new building for Ysgol y Garnedd in Bangor.
Councillor Cemlyn Rees Williams, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, said: “It was great to see the new School today. The pupils and staff will benefit greatly from the opportunity to have a first class learning environment in this way.
“The increasing demand for places at the school means that the current school is no longer suited to their needs, and pupils will benefit from a new and modern facility fit for learning and teaching in the 21st Century.”
The new school will also include dedicated space for specialist units, Cylch Meithrin and childcare.
Education Minister Kirsty Williams said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this incredible project and I look forward to Ysgol y Garnedd opening its doors to pupils for the first time in just a few weeks.
“Our national mission is to raise standards, reduce the attainment gap and deliver an education system that is a source of national pride and confidence.
“Projects such as this are crucial if we are to provide our pupils with the learning environments they deserve, while supporting them to achieve their aspirations.”
Councillor Elin Walker Jones, who represents Glyder Ward in Bangor, added: “I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to see the new Ysgol y Garnedd building, and I look forward to seeing all the pupils and teachers and staff settling in the beautiful building. We have waited a long time for this and it will be worth it! Thank you to everyone who has made Ysgol y Garnedd possible.”
This is part of a wider project where Gwynedd Council and the Welsh Government are investing over £12.7 million on primary education in the Bangor area. The project is part of the first wave of 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme funding, which also includes the extension and refurbishment of Ysgol y Faenol with construction work getting under way earlier this year.
