On Sunday, 6 February, 167 willows were planted at the Rhandiroedd Nantporth Allotments site in Bangor.
Fourteen plot holders and volunteers joined the session during a mainly dry and breezy afternoon. Thankfully, the previous evening’s rain made planting the willow easier.
It is hoped that the willow will help to stop the lower section of the site getting as wet as it has done in the past, as well as providing an improved habitat for wildlife.
Rhandiroedd Nantporth Allotments was granted planning permission from Gwynedd Council last year following a fundraising appeal amongst the groups’ supporters. The community orchard and 30 allotment plots will provide more people with access to cheaper fresh and healthy food with near minimum food miles.
The next workday on the site will be 10am-3pm on Sunday, March 6th. Work will include hand-weeding the hedgerow saplings, and clearing ditches. For anyone interested in joining the session, please contact Rhandiroedd Nantporth Allotments Community Interest Group on tyfu.tygwydr@gmail.com
