The Welsh Government has agreed a deal to sell land at Parc Bryn Cegin near Bangor according to reports.
The site was built in 2000 and despite several promises of development, it has remained empty for over twenty years. More than £11m has been spent on the site but no businesses have ever been located on the site.
Liberty Properties Developments Ltd were chosen by the Welsh Government in 2015 to create a multi-screen cinema and restaurant scheme, but while a cinema operator has been secured, the developers have been unable to attract enough restaurants to make the scheme viable.
More recent developments at the site included plans for a £14m cheese plant which didn’t materialise. A 187 space ‘Park and Share’ car park was completed at the site this year, originally planned for a shuttle bus service for the now shelved Wylfa Newydd nuclear site on Anglesey, but has remained unused since its completion.
North Wales Live have now reported that Minister for the Economy Vaughan Gething has agreed to the sale of the Welsh Government’s interest in the freehold of a plot.
According to the report “It is early days with the proposal and Welsh Government said more details will be released in due course”.
Development Plots are now for sale at the 90 acre site with the Welsh Government offering additional financial support to qualifying projects.
The sites are available for sale freehold subject to confirmation of design and use in accordance with the ‘overall masterplan’ of Parc Bryn Cegin.
All developments must comply with Welsh Government’s sustainable buildings policy. Individual development plots from 0.91 hectares (2.25 acres) up to 2.29 hectares (5.66 acres) are available.
Arfon MS Sian Gwenllian told North Wales Live: “I very much hope that the Government’s announcement is positive news for a business park that has scandalously laid empty for the past 20 years, but I eagerly await to see the details, and fully understand the practical reality and significance of what the Government has just announced. I have consistently pushed the Government for action.
“We need more high quality jobs in Gwynedd and Parc Bryn Cegin offers a perfect opportunity. I look forward to seeing if the Welsh Government has the political will.”
