The Church in Wales has launched the process to appoint a new Bishop of Bangor.

The Diocese of Bangor described the appointment as a significant moment, with the successful candidate expected to help shape the future direction of the church while strengthening relationships across its communities.

Church leaders say they are seeking a bishop who can “rebuild trust and relationships” and serve as “a healer and pastor, with discernment and integrity”. The role will require a visible presence across the diocese, along with the ability to communicate the Christian message with clarity and conviction.

A candidate profile published by the Church in Wales highlights the qualities being sought, describing the ideal applicant as “a shepherd and pastor, with a genuine deep faith and love for people”, who can also offer strategic leadership while remaining sensitive to the needs of others.

The vacancy follows the retirement of Andrew John, who served as Bishop of Bangor from 2008 before becoming Archbishop of Wales in 2021. He stepped down from his roles in August 2025 after more than 15 years leading the diocese.

The Diocese of Bangor covers north-west Wales, including Gwynedd and Anglesey. Its cathedral, St Deiniol’s Cathedral, recently marked its 1,500th anniversary.

Expressions of interest are now open, with the Electoral College due to meet in June to elect the next Bishop of Bangor.
