The Football Association of Wales has announced that men’s competitive football in Tiers 3 to 5 and women’s football in tier 2, has been cancelled for the rest of the season.
The decision was made in light of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but there is still hope that the top tiers will return to action in March should Wales drop to Alert Level 3.
Several other leagues and cups have also been scrapped, but the news is better for the higher leagues.
- The JD Cymru Premier will return to Elite status with a proposed playing calendar of 5 March – 31 May.
- The JD Cymru North and South also regains Elite status with their seasons planned to run from 20 March – 29 May.
- The Welsh Cup will be played, but for teams in Tier 1 and 2 only, with ties played from 20 April 20 – 5 June.
The National League Board (the NLB), the National Cup Board (the NCB) and the Community Game Board (the CGB) have provided an update on the status of competitions on Thursday 4 February.
The FAW said in a statement: “The decisions by the relevant Boards have taken into account the current Welsh Government guidelines and measures in relation to COVID-19 with the health and safety of everyone involved being of the utmost importance.”
To compensate for the loss of action this year, the statement outlined that fees will not be expected for the 2021/22 season from clubs who have already paid this year, but not played.
