North Wales Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) have issued a safety warning after they attended fires in Bangor and Tregarth this evening.

Homes were evacuated near Bangor Mountain after the fire service were called to a fire just after 4pm this afternoon. Fire crews also tackled a blaze in Tregarth on open land near to the village school. Smoke from the fires could be clearly seen from Anglesey.

A spokesperson fro NWFRS said: “We are also currently dealing with a fire on Bangor Mountain – updates on our social media. We were called to this incident at 1600hrs – four appliances are in attendance. 20x30m gorse and bracken involved. 2 main jets and one hose reel jet in use.”

North Wales Police confirmed that homes in close proximity to the fire in the Hendrewen were evacuated to ensure the safety of residents and the road was closed while crews talked the fire.

NWFRS said: “We were also called to an incident in Tregarth at 1556hrs – three appliances attended (near to Pant yr Ardd). Affecting 500 sq metres of gorse and bracken.

“Crews used two main jets and two hose reel jets to tackle the fire. Residents were asked to keep doors and windows closed whilst we deal with the incident as the wind was causing smoke to disperse.”

A statement later this evening said: “Bangor Mountain fire is now under control and residents are able to safely return to their properties. Firefighters are damping down at this evening’s Tregarth fire.

“Fires like this put lives in danger & tremendous pressure on our resources. Please be responsible.

“Please consider the consequences – now is not the time to be burning or starting fires in the open as they can quickly spread out of control, especially in dry weather.

“Please be responsible – the smoke from such grass fires can also cause breathing problems and worsen conditions such as asthma, at a time when the health of our communities is already of heightened concern due to Covid-19 #StaySafe.”
