An opportunity has become available for a new operator to take over one of Bangor’s newest and most prominent pubs following a major refurbishment.

Stonegate Pub Partners is seeking a hands-on publican to run The Castle (Y Castell) on Glanrafon, directly opposite Bangor Cathedral and just a short walk from Bangor University.

The venue reopened in October 2024 after undergoing a six-figure transformation and has quickly established itself as a popular destination for families during the day and sports fans and nightlife customers in the evening.

Designed as a modern pub with broad appeal, The Castle offers seating for more than 100 diners, serving breakfast, lunch and evening meals, alongside a wide selection of real ales, craft beers, cocktails and alcohol-free options. The venue is also dog-friendly and regularly hosts live sport across multiple HD television screens, before switching to DJ entertainment and late-night trading into the early hours.

Stonegate says the ideal operator will be someone with experience in pub and food management who enjoys building relationships with customers and becoming part of the local community.

The company is looking for someone who can organise busy match days, quiz nights and promotions while also developing community events such as charity evenings, open mic nights and sports screenings.

Regional managers believe the business has significant potential to build on its existing success.

In the recruitment information, Stonegate states:

“The Castle provides a fantastic opportunity for an operator to take over an already thriving pub and push it to the next level.”

It adds that the business already performs well during the daytime with food before becoming a busy destination for live sport and evening entertainment.

The pub is being offered on a Fixed Term Tenancy agreement.

Stonegate forecasts an annual turnover of £1,189,830, made up of approximately £833,058 in wet sales and £356,773 in food sales.

The guide rent is listed at £615 per week (£32,000 annually), while operators taking the fully tied agreement would pay £1,779 per week (£92,500 annually). Additional weekly costs include a £77 repair fund contribution and £240 towards fixtures and fittings.

Prospective operators will also need an £8,000 deposit and an £835 agreement fee before taking on the tenancy.

Stonegate says previous experience running a pub is helpful but not essential, with training, business planning support and regular guidance provided throughout the application process and beyond. Applicants will need to complete the British Institute of Innkeeping’s PEAT qualification before taking over the business and hold, or obtain, a personal licence to sell alcohol.

Occupying one of Bangor’s most recognisable city centre locations, The Castle sits at the heart of a busy area attracting local residents, students, visitors and tourists throughout the year. Its position opposite the Cathedral, close to the High Street and university campus, gives it access to a diverse customer base from breakfast through to late-night entertainment.

Anyone interested in taking on the venue can find further information and apply through Stonegate Pub Partners’ website.
