Steve Backshall MBE, one of television’s best-known wildlife presenters, naturalists, writers, and adventurers, received an honorary degree at Bangor University today, 12 July.

An honorary lecturer at Bangor University, Steve Backshall teaches students about conservation, zoology and the wildlife filming industry. Steve’s lectures are among the most popular with plans afoot for live feeds from Steve’s filming locations and field trips.

Speaking before the ceremony, Steve said “In my younger years at school, I struggled with science, I found maths really hard and statistics impossible. To have completed my journey and having graduated in the sciences and now to be standing here as an honorary lecturer, with an honorary doctorate at Bangor University is surreal, and one of the proudest days of my life.”

Addressing the students, he said “I think Bangor University offers the finest opportunity for any student of natural sciences, anywhere in the nation, it’s one of the finest in the world. You have on your doorstep, such a surfeit of natural resources that no one else has, and to be able to study here and then go out and experience the natural world yourself in the very finest of ways is what makes here so very special.”
