E-Sgwrs / E-Chat is a bespoke virtual befriending service that is available for individuals living in Gwynedd; a free bi-lingual service for individuals that are impacted by loneliness and isolation, who are socially excluded from their communities.

The serrvice has been developed by Eryri Co-Operative Cyf in response to the Covid-19 pandemic by introducing a new way of reaching out and communicating with individuals that have been affected.

“We are excited to launch our free virtual service on St David’s day to support people that are living in our local communities”, said Gwenda Hughes of Eryri Co-Operative Cyf. “Covid-19 has had a huge effect on everyone’s lives with the lack of social interaction impacting on our overall wellbeing. There are so many free digital platforms that are accessible which enables us to offer a friendly virtual chat in either Welsh or English.”

The team will offer regular contact (weekly, fortnightly, or monthly as required) through a virtual chat so that the individual can see the person they are talking to, thus providing a friendly face whom they can trust to make a difference in their lives.

It will be delivered using on-line platforms and apps of their choice which they feel comfortable to use. These platforms are readily available and are free to download to their personal digital devices.  E-Sgwrs/ E-Chat will be delivered through various social platforms to include WhatsApp, Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Facetime.

The service is available to individuals over 18 years living in Gwynedd who would benefit from the availability of a virtual chat with a friendly face to alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation and improve mental health.

Additionally, to the virtual befriending chat Eryri Co-Operative Cyf have a small number of tablets; iPads and Android devices that available free on a short term loan to individuals who have no digital devices.

“We welcome self-referrals from individuals, from family and friends on their behalf and referrals from organisations that are working in health and social care in Gwynedd”, said Gwenda.

“E-Sgwrs / E-Chat has been funded by the National Lottery Awards for All programme, Mantell Gwynedd, through the Comic Relief Covid-19 Emergency Third Sector Fund and Digital Communities Wales.

“To support with service delivery, we are looking for volunteers to come and join our team. So, if anyone has a few spare hours per week/month and would like to be part of E-Sgwrs / E-Chat in making a difference in individuals lives get in touch with us.”
