The countdown is on to what promises to be a spectacular lantern display in Bangor, organised by community project Lleu – Goleuo Gwynedd.
The community arts engagement project is led by a team of grassroots artists and arts organisations who co-create and co-celebrate with the rich diversity of people who live and work in the region, from Enlli to Penrhyn Bay.
The spirit of the Bangor lantern parade is to light up “Solstice”, the longest night of winter and with some festive fun. The parade takes place on Tuesday, December 21st at 4.15 pm from Bangor Arts Initiative gallery located in the Deiniol shopping centre, exiting from the clock tower entrance.
Ffynci Jync drummers will lead the parade through the city High Street with Mr and Mrs Clause and the Nut Cracker stilt walkers from Cimera circus, along with lots of your favourite characters for this festive season.
Joining the parade will be Lleu Bangor’s creative partners Lleu Caernarfon (CARN) and Llyn Lleu, carrying lanterns from their own winter lantern parades.
The lanterns were all made during the Lleu winter workshop sessions. The local community are invited come along, dress up, festive or fancy, and enjoy the fun!.
The Lleu project is funded by the Connect and Flourish Grant from the Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Government. To celebrate the coastal communities of the Menai, Caernarfon Bay and the Llŷn.

Rock around Bangor clock
The LLEU project also invite you to ‘Rock around the Clock’ this Saturday, December 18th 1-4 pm, for a Festive afternoon.
The outdoor event will run alongside the Lleu willow lantern workshops running from the Bangor arts initiative gallery in preparation for the Solstice Lantern parade on December 21st at 4.15 pm.
This is an opportunity for the public to come along and make their lanterns in an ample open space accompanied by local musicians whilst enjoying Bangor high street for a festive afternoon.
Lleu will be adhering to the Welsh government guidelines around Covid 19 for both events.
