Two volunteer police officers based within the Road Safety Unit at Llandegai near Bangor, have been commended for their dedication and productivity.

Special Constables Sam Owens and Ben Smith were awarded their commendation certificates by Superintendent Jane Banham on behalf of the Roads Policing Unit at their base in Llandegai.

Special Constable Sam Owens, who works in Tesco, has been with the Special Constabulary for three years, with Special Constable Ben Smith, who recently finished his Geography degree at Bangor University, joined a year and a half ago.

Superintendent Banham said: “Our Special Constables deserve every bit of recognition for their selfless commitment in helping to keep North Wales safe. Both officers are an integral part of the Roads Policing Unit, they each volunteer many hours to assist their regular colleagues, even working weekends and late/night shifts.

“Their work ethic, productivity, commitment and dedication are outstanding and both have significantly contributed North Wales Police’ vision to reduce road casualties and make North Wales the safest place in the UK.”

Both officers have made successful arrests including drink and drug drivers, seized vehicles due to no insurance and attended road traffic collisions.

Special Constable Sam Owens has had recent successful court outcomes including a drink driver in Cemaes Bay being disqualified for 22 months and a drug driver, who was caught on the A55 between Abergwyngregyn and Talybont being disqualified from driving for three years.

Special Constable Ben Smith investigated a fail to stop collision in Talwrn on Anglesey back in February where the driver was traced and was given nine penalty points and fined £475.

Special Constabulary Chief Officer, Mark Owen said: “As the Force Special Constabulary continues to grow in numbers, we are also growing in terms of the work we involve ourselves in and the specialisms we undertake. Our capability to support our paid colleagues, and therefore contribute to the safety of our communities is constantly increasing.

“Both officers go over and above what is expected of them, by showing skill, compassion and dedication along the way. They should both be extremely proud of themselves.”

The Special Constabulary’s Road Safety Unit was set-up in 2016 and work out of St Asaph and Llandegai. They work closely alongside their colleagues in the Roads Policing Unit and Local Policing Teams across the region.
