Siân Gwenllian MS has today brought the compelling case for establishing a dental school in Bangor directly to the heart of Welsh democracy, leading a seminar in the Senedd that gathered together influential figures from the worlds of higher education and dentistry.
Hosted in the Senedd, the event showcased the findings of a comprehensive report commissioned by Siân Gwenllian and produced by Lafan Consulting. The report lays out the urgent need for a dental school in north Wales and highlights the transformative impact such an institution could have on local dental services, training, recruitment, and broader community health outcomes.
Speaking after the event, Siân Gwenllian said: “Today, I was proud to bring this case straight to my colleagues in the Senedd. The evidence is clear — north Wales desperately needs a dental school, and Bangor is the right place for it. This is not just about education; it’s about delivering better care for our communities.”
Attendees included key stakeholders from Welsh universities, the dental profession, and Members of the Senedd from all parties, including Jeremy Miles the Cabinet Secretary for Health. The session examined the report’s key findings and explored next steps for the vision.
“We had a room full of highly influential people — people who understand the urgency of the dental crisis in North Wales and who are in positions to help shape the solution,” Siân added.
“Their support and engagement are vital as we move forward.”
Siân Gwenllian is now calling on the Welsh Government to give the proposal serious consideration and to work collaboratively with universities and the NHS to take the idea forward.
