The Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for Bangor High Street has been extended for a further three years.
It has been agreed between Gwynedd Council, North Wales Police and partner agencies that there is a continuing need for the PSPO to remain in force in the area and it has therefore been extended for a further 3 years until 30 November 2025.
The PSPO covering the City Centre of Bangor is a crucial tool for policing the centre and deterring antisocial behaviour. Since it was first granted in 2019, it has proven to have a positive impact on local residents and businesses on the High Street and surrounding areas.
The conditions of the Order are that individuals must not:
- Behaving in a manner that is likely to cause harassment, alarm, nuisance, or distress
- Loitering in a state of intoxication through alcohol or drug induced activity
- Consuming alcohol or being in possession of open containers of alcohol likely to cause or causing ASB is prohibited in the restricted Area. A constable or PCSO may require anyone in breach of this condition not to consume alcohol or anything they believe to be alcohol and to surrender anything in their possession which is alcohol
- Loitering within 10 meters of any cash point
PC Siwan Humphreys said: “The Policing Team for the area welcomes the decision to extend the PSPO for a further 3 years. This will assist the team when dealing with individuals who persistently behave in an anti-social manner and have a detrimental effect on the community.
“We look forward to continue to work with the Council and other partner agencies to make Bangor City Centre a welcoming place for everyone to visit, live and work.”
A breach of the PSPO is a criminal offence and is dealt with by way of Fixed Penalty Notice or prosecution through the Magistrates’ Court.
