Plans for the first houses built by Gwynedd Council for over 30 years have been unveiled for a site in the Coed Mawr area of Bangor.
As part of the Council’s Tŷ Gwynedd scheme, plans have been developed to build homes for local people on the former Coed Mawr school site in Bangor. The Council is beginning statutory consultation on the plans to build six three-bedroom houses and four two-bedroom houses – the comments received will be fed into the final plans for the site.
Should planning permission be granted, the Council’s Housing and Property Department hopes that these new houses in Bangor will be available for purchase / rent at the end of 2023.
Through the ‘Tŷ Gwynedd’ scheme, the Council intends to build new homes in communities across the county. The ambitious scheme will offer intermediate affordable homes to the many local people who are unable to buy or rent a house on the open market and who do not qualify for social housing.
Councillor Craig ab Iago, Gwynedd Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “Every person has a fundamental right to have access to a good quality affordable home. Unfortunately, in the current situation, too many Gwynedd people are being priced out of being able to afford to rent a property or buy their own house.
“In order to tackle this injustice, Gwynedd Council has developed a Housing Action Plan for the county which includes more than 30 schemes that will provide 1,500 quality homes for the people of the county over the next five years. We will use funding that includes the council tax premium on second and empty homes to build new homes, buy and restore empty properties as well as offer grants to local people to access housing.
“This exciting development at Coed Mawr in Bangor is the first of our Tŷ Gwynedd schemes. The figures clearly show that there is a real need for this type of intermediate affordable housing in the area – and we are keen to hear the views of local people on the initial plans.
“The comments will help us as we finalise the proposals and submit a planning application later this year, and if approved, we hope the first houses will be ready in 2023. So if you’re interested, make sure you look at the plans and share your views.
