An ambitious plan has been launched to extend Bangor Pier across the Menai Strait to create a third crossing between Anglesey and the mainland.
Construction on a third crossing was due to start in 2021 with the preferred new crossing from the A55 across the Menai Strait to the east of the current Britannia Bridge.
However, campaigners have now launched a plan to extend Bangor Pier across the Strait, enabling pedestrians and cyclists to make the short trip across to Anglesey.
The Pier, which is Grade II listed and currently at 460m in length, would only need to be extended by another 400m to complete the crossing.
A £1 million restoration project has recently taken place on the Pier, the first major renovation programme since the 1980s.
A spokesperson for the plans said: “This is the perfect solution to a problem that’s lingered on for years.
“It’s cost effective and a completely green alternative that will bring a huge tourist boost to Bangor.”
However not everyone is in favour of the new plans, with one local resident complaining: “If the Pier is extended over to Anglesey it would then become a bridge and it could no longer be called a pier, so for that reason I’m against it, it‘s always been known as Bangor Pier.”
An announcement on whether the plans have any credibility is expected at 12:01pm today.
