Some service users in North Wales may not be able to use their landline and others have reported problems with their internet services, following a fire at BT’s customer service centre in Bangor.

 

North Wales Fire service were called to the incident on Garth Road in Bangor at 17:40hrs this evening, 29 July. Smoke could be seen billowing out of the building. Police closed the road and requested that people avoid the area while the incident was ongoing.

The Fire Service confirmed they deployed 4 Fire engines to the incident, which is believed to have been brought under control at around 19.30hrs.

An update from North Wales Fire Service Update at 19:20hrs said: “We’re currently in attendance at a building fire on Garth Road, Bangor – please keep away from the area. Pedestrian access is still blocked, but the road will soon be re-opened for vehicles.

“As a result of the fire in Bangor some residents in North Wales may be unable to make outgoing calls on their landline. Should you need to call 999 please do so through your mobile provider.”

The building is located in the centre of Bangor and opened in 1957. A major upgrade was completed in January 2021, with a full refurbishment to modernise it and create an improved workspace for the 150 staff currently based at centre.

Bangor is a key service centre location for BT and provides a number of bespoke services on behalf of company such as Welsh language customer service and directory enquiries, payphone customer services and handling BT Group head office switchboard.
