The move, reportedly backed by “linguistic consultants” and “frustrated locals,” aims to finally tackle the long-standing issue of people pronouncing the city’s name as “Banger.”
According to sources (who definitely weren’t overheard in a café), the silent “e” at the end would act as a gentle hint – encouraging people to say it properly, or at least less incorrectly.
“We’ve tried correcting people politely for years,” said one resident.
“If adding an ‘e’ stops just one person saying ‘Banger’, it’ll be worth it.”
The proposal is said to include:
- New road signs across Gwynedd
- Updated sat-nav databases (good luck with that)
- A public awareness campaign titled “Mind Your ‘E’”
Not everyone is convinced that it’s a good idea, however.
One sceptical local said:
“People will just start saying ‘Bang-or-ee’ instead, won’t they?”
Meanwhile, others have suggested going further – with alternative spellings like Bangoré, Bangaur, or even Ban-gor.
A spokesperson (who may or may not exist) reassured residents:
“This is about civic pride. And also, we’re just a bit tired of hearing it said wrong.”
The changes are expected to come into effect before 12 pm… today, 1st April.
