Inspirational Captain Tom Moore has now raised £17.5 million by walking 100 lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday. The money will go directly to NHS charities across the UK through his chosen charity, NHS Charities Together.
NHS Charities Together are coordinating multiple national fundraising campaigns to help boost the NHS’ response to COVID-19. You may have heard of #PlayersTogether, where Premier League footballers have clubbed together to support the NHS; One Million Claps, which is asking people that take part in #ClapForCarers to give money as well as applause; and the Virtual Grand National, which raised over £2 million a fortnight ago. These are all campaigns that have been organised for or with NHS Charities Together.
These campaigns have huge national appeal – so absolutely everyone can get involved – and huge local impact – because it is the local NHS charities that benefit.
North Wales NHS Charity Awyr Las has already received a grant of £35,000 from NHS Charities Together. With it, frontline staff have already been able to buy tablet computers so patients can keep in touch with loved ones when visiting isn’t possible. Some of this money will cover volunteer drivers’ expenses, to keep them on the road, so they can continue to collect donations from local businesses and deliver important items to hospital sites across the region.
Thanks to Captain Tom, the Premier League footballers, One Million Clap participants and anyone else that has donated to or fundraised for an NHS Charities Together campaign, Awyr Las will soon receive further grants of even more money. These too will be used quickly, where they are needed most.
Captain Tom’s wish was to say thank you to the “brave and super nurses and doctors” that we’re so fortunate to have. His amazing fundraising efforts and all your lovely donations mean this wish will come true!
A spokesperson for Awyr Las said: “With Awyr Las and other NHS charities, it’s the frontline staff that make decisions about where the money is spent, because they know better than anyone what will make the biggest difference for them and their patients.
“So whether you’ve given to NHS Charities Together or Awyr Las directly (or maybe both!) your money will make a difference where it matters to you – close to home. By giving directly to an NHS charity like Awyr Las, or though NHS Charities Together, you’re guaranteeing that your money will help get the NHS exactly what it needs, when it needs it.
“Perhaps most importantly, by choosing to support NHS charities, you’re ensuring that those at the beating heart of the NHS – its wonderful, dedicated staff – get the extra support and recognition they deserve.
“We are so proud to see that so many people in North Wales want to support their local NHS during a time of great need. Your response to this crisis has been exceptional. We really can’t say this loud enough or often enough: Thank you.”
