North Wales activists gathered in Penmaenmawr earlier this week, on Wednesday 9 June, to take part in MAKE THE WAVE1, a UK wide action by more than 80 coastal communities calling for the G7 Summit to prioritise action on climate change.

The event included stories from those already affected by sea level rise, Children’s letters to the Earth, Edible Conwy, Extinction Rebellion Bangor, Conwy and Wrexham, local Jerusalema Dancers, Friends of the Earth and even an appearance from the mysterious Red Rebel Brigade.

Members of the public were given information to raise their awareness and understanding of global sea level rise3 including maps of flooding around coastal areas of Wales.

The Penmaenmawr action came as Oceanographers from Bangor University warned that rising sea levels could cut off the A55, wash away railways and swamp north Wales’ coastal communities by the end of this century.

An event attendee and retired resident of Fairbourne, a Gwynedd village already set to be decommissioned in the face of sea level rises, said: “I feel very strongly that since the Paris agreement, little to nothing has been done about the urgency related to climate change. I truly believe that the promises are fickle and duplicitous.”

A spokesperson for the protestors said: “Make The Wave is part of a wider set of G7-related actions.  It sends a clear signal, to Boris Johnson and G72 summit delegates representing several billion citizens, that ordinary people demand greater, immediate action to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. The action’s focus is on the resulting rise in sea level – we are already drowning in promises, now we demand action. Building higher sea defences is not the answer. Tackling emissions, especially our continued dependence on fossil fuels, is what is needed.”
