Following a successful crime commissioner’s grant of £2,500, new equipment has arrived at Maesgeirchen Boxing Club in Bangor. The funding was awarded as part of the ‘Your Community, Your Choice’ awards, which uses cash seized from criminals to help community groups in North Wales.

The much needed funding has helped purchase gym and boxing equipment for the club, which has been run for almost 30 years by a well-known former champion, Brian ‘Bach’ Williams.

There are also plans for the club to feature on next series of the BBC‘s “ILL Gotten Gains” programme, a documentary series that follows regional organised crime units and police forces as they take down Britain’s criminals by seizing their assets and selling them at auction.

It’s also hoped the Maes G Boxing Club will be able to move to a bigger premises on the estate in the future. Councillor Nigel Pickavance said: “Hopefully this will give a platform to highlight all the great equipment the club has but more importantly how important it is for Brian to have a space in the new Community building when it happens.”

A Boxing Club and Social Club were the two most popular choices to come out of the Building Communities Trust Consultation, which will see £1million from the Big Lottery Fund spent to improve the Maesgeirchen estate over the next ten years.
